Onyx was one of the most popular stones in ancient Greece and Rome. Its name comes from the greek word "onyx" that means nail.

According to the myth, someday Eros cut Aphrodite's nails with an arrow when she was sleeping. He left the pieces of her nails scattered in the sand and the Moires came and transformed them into stones (onyx), so that no piece of the gods would be ever lost.
